FutureShield Turns 20: A Celebration of Vision, Resilience, and Heart

July 7, 2005 – July 7, 2025

Twenty years ago, FutureShield began with a simple but powerful idea: “How can improvements in technology better support the people on the frontlines of public safety”? From her base in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Cynthia Weeden, driven by industry experience and a bold entrepreneurial spirit, set out to answer that question. She launched FutureShield on July 7, 2005, and hasn’t looked back since.

Today, we are proud to celebrate two decades of dedication, innovation, and heart.

FutureShield has grown into a trusted partner for emergency management, security, and critical infrastructure organizations across Canada who want to modernize. Futhermore, FutureShield has become a symbol of what’s possible when you combine technical know-how with genuine care for people and community.

As a woman-owned and proudly diverse business, FutureShield has always led a little differently. Cynthia built the company not just to succeed, but to serve—to provide real solutions that make a difference in moments that matter most. Whether it's helping a city prepare for emergencies or supporting responders with better training tools, FutureShield is there, behind the scenes, making things work better and smarter.

A Few Milestones We’re Proud Of:

  • One Trusted Point of Contact: From project planning to software rollouts and training, we’ve stood by our clients every step of the way. No passing the buck—just real people offering real support.
  • National Recognition: In 2021, Cynthia was named one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women by the Women’s Executive Network (WXN). It was a proud moment, not just for her, but for everyone who has been part of the FutureShield story.
  • The Canadian Alerting System Goes Mobile: Cynthia led the lobby to the CRTC for advancements to the national alerting system to provide wireless alerts to mobile phones, in partnership with Dan McArthur and Bruce Power. Gathering support from the Canadian Chiefs of Fire, Police, and EMS and communities across Canada, she is proud that today all Canadians have the ability to receive Amber Alerts and Critical Life Safety Alerts.

Our Clients: The Reason We’re Here

Over the years, we’ve had the honour of working with dedicated professionals in emergency services across every sector of Canadian government and critical infrastructure. Each client has helped shape us and challenged us to be better and led us to being on a continuous hunt for the latest and greatest tech for public safety.

Looking Ahead

Twenty years in, the heart of our work hasn’t changed. We still believe that when you listen deeply, lead with integrity, and embrace innovation, you create something lasting. We’re excited about what the future holds—and more determined than ever to keep serving, supporting, and evolving alongside our clients and partners. Keep an eye out for some new products that will leap-frog and innovate with:

  1. Artificial intelligence
  2. Mobile Apps that work in Offline Mode
  3. Virtual Reality
  4. Sensor-based integrations

Thank you to everyone who has been part of our journey so far. Here’s to the next chapter.

With gratitude,
The FutureShield Team
