The role of mass notification is to effectively communicate important information to the right people at the right time. In the event of an emergency, that information could be life-saving.

As such, choosing and installing a mass notification system is a serious business. They incorporate such a wide array of technology – telephony solutions that rely on decades-old infrastructure to the latest in wireless communications. Making the right decisions is paramount, says Cynthia Weeden, since the options available are nearly endless.

"Mass notification systems are probably one of the busiest areas in terms of using new technology in security and emergency management today. When I say busy, you probably have 100 different vendors to choose from when looking at a mass notification system," she says

There are many considerations beyond technology choices, she says, like working within the federal privacy framework and meeting the requirements of the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association if you’re going to use their cell phone towers for emergency purposes.

“It tends to be the first application organizations start looking towards when they consider how to keep their employees safe. But it encapsulates so much more,” she says.
